It is officially pumpkin season and that means long lines at Starbucks waiting for sugary drinks made with artificial ingredients. No thank you!

I personally like my coffee plain and simple, but when I tested this creamer out it felt like a warm hug. It had just a hint of fall flavor, plus it takes 30 seconds to make!

The biggest thing when you make this creamer are the brands that you are buying.

I purchased Elmhurst Hazelnut milk and Trader Joe’s Full Fat Canned Coconut Milk. These brands are the cleanest I have found without artificial flavors, gums, oils, or sweeteners.

To make:

Empty one can of Full Fat Coconut Milk into a larger Nutribullet container and top with 1/2 - 1 Cup of Hazelnut milk depending on how thin you like your creamer to be.

Pulse/Blend for 30 seconds.

Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

There have been articles with titles like " Oatly: the New Coke" and "Some Plant based eaters are boycotting Oatly" ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Today I wanted to break talk about some of these headlines and offer up my two cents. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So here's a little backstory - Oatly is a Swedish brand that was founded in the 1990's due to a large part of Swedish population unable to drink milk, or not wanting to support the dairy industry. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2012 Oatly hired a new CEO who re-branded the milk alternative and brought it over to the US. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The re-branding placed a HEAVY focus on both health and the environment - two of the main issues they are under fire for right now! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So Here are some things that stuck out to me


⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Oatly adds Rapeseed Oil to their product ( AKA Canola) - we know this is highly inflammatory and linked to Alzheimer's, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and more. ⠀ After a little digging and flipping over multiple brands of Oat Milk in the grocery store - added oil was in every single store bought Oat Milk I saw. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. There is evidence that how they create the oatmilk and the enzyme they are adding to break down the fiber turns to maltose - which effects the blood sugar levels in the same or worse ways as HFCS. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Oatly is not organic, and oats are DIRTY! A study done on oats found 7 different pesticides on them ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. About 10% of Oatly was recently purchased by a company that has a major impact on the Amazon Deforestation- Oatly's response was "we're convinced that if we’re to progress in the shift towards plant-based we have to involve governments and private equity firms, and steer more global capital into green investments." ⠀

So now we have almond milk that is unsafe for the bees, and Oat milk that is unsafe for us - what do we do?

We make our own.

Oatmilk in my opinion is the easiest nut milk to make. There is no soaking required and the straining process is light on the muscles!

Some things to note before buying oats:

I always look for certified GF, Organic oats (see point 3!). Oats are naturally gluten free but can become contaminated during the processing part. Bob’s Red Mill has certified GF and Organic oats.

How to make Oat Milk

1 Cup GF Organic Oats

4 Cups Filtered Water

High Speed Blender

Cheese Cloth or Nut Milk Bag

Put oats and water in blender and blend on medium - high speed for 30- 40 seconds. This is important because over blending will result in a gummy milk

Pour the milk into a nut milk bag, and squeeze gently to release all the water.

Store in a glass jar in the fridge for about 1 week.

Easy!

Back to school - the eco edition!

I’ve been out of school for so many years it’s hard to even keep track, but there is just something about this time of year that feels like a reset. Whether you’re in school, have kids in school, or feel like I do about this season shift this post is for you.

Back to school means a lot of shopping. School supplies, snacks, wardrobe, etc. Excess shopping means excess waste. At Hungry Hippie we are all about reducing our waste, and lessening the negative impact that we have on the environment, so today I am going to share with you some simple swaps and tools I use to make a more positive impact on Mama Earth!


Shop Organic

When I think of back to school I immediately think of back to school shopping. Growing up I went to Catholic school so we took a trip to Flynn O’hara and got some knee high socks and pretty much called it a day. BUT then came dress down days. Once I month I would go to the mall and find a new outfit, because “I could not be seen in the same outfit twice!” Once I was out of school and working in corporate FASHION I “had to” be on top of trends so shopping every season was essential. Now I treat myself to a few new pieces a year, but make sure that they are coming from brands that are doing the right thing. The fashion industry is a leading cause of environmental issues - from water contamination to production waste and everything in between - it is bad. My thought process is - if it’s bad for the environment it’s bad for me too - so I look for brands that are organic, sustainably sourced, and offer incentives for the environment.

PACT Organics is my go to for basics - I love their underwear. I live in their basic sweatshirt year round, and I just invested in some of their basic dresses!

TenTree plants a new tree for every item purchased! They also use organic and sustainable materials like cotton and hemp.

Allbirds is my favorite sneaker ever! Although the material is wool (technically not vegan) they work with organizations to ensure the safety of the animals when sheering ( a process that is necessary for the health of the sheep!) If wool really isn’t your thing they also have other materials available. They also share technology with the rest of the footwear industry focusing on the greater good of the planet and thinking MACRO!

Packed Lunches

Whether your working from home or you have a hybrid student in the house, prepping lunches in advance is probably something that you will be doing to keep morning running smoothly.Packed lunches can be super wasteful, so here are some tips to help you keep that trash can from filling up!

  1. Avoiding plastic sandwich bags is pretty easy these days. If you don’t mind a few extra dishes Stasher bags are my go to, but if you’re maxed out on time spent at the sink opt for Compostable paper bags instead.

  2. One thing that I found very interesting when I was learning more about recycling was that Chip and Candy bags are made with mixed plastic and aluminum materials and are recycling contaminants. This means that they can not be recycled with the rest of your plastics. Back to school food shopping often includes individually packed snack bags or candy bars - one way to reduce your waste this season is to opt for larger bags and pre-pack them into reusable snack bags yourself. You can also check out TerraCycle which offers recycling options for products that would traditionally end up in a landfill.

  3. Same thing goes for juice boxes and juice pouches. When possible shop for Juices in glass bottles and portion out in reusable and seal able cups!

Shop Second Hand

For a while I was purchasing digital books, but I love to hold and have a copy of books that I love. Once I stopped buying digital I started buying second hand. If you need a book for school, or a coworker just shared a must read there’s a few different options. Always see if you could borrow a book, or set up an office swap. I sometimes get weird and won’t lend out books, so I totally understand if people don’t want to do that. If it’s a book you think you’ll want to own check on sites like Amazon for pre-owned in good condition. You can also check out your local library for FREE reading!


Healthy Swaps

Well it wouldn’t be a post on Hungry Hippie if we didn’t talk about healthy swaps. So much of what is considered normal in American diets is filled with sugar and unhealthy ingredients. It is time for a serious upgrade. Here are a few of my favorite swaps for American Classics:

Infusing Vinegars

One of the most exciting parts of plant based eating to me is the creative aspect of it.

I love that cashews can be turned into “milk”, yogurt, cheese, or granola.

Or how watermelon skin can be pickled and added to a veggie burger as a slaw. The opportunities to utilize what I have in my kitchen for a multitude of purposes not only helps fuel that creative energy, but also helps to keep my kitchen relatively low waste.

One thing I was really excited to try doing was vinegar infusions for cleaning and beauty.

I’ll walk you through a few of the versions I made with some instructions and my experience using them.

Vinegar Infusions for Cleaning

I made a few jars of vinegar infusions on one day. The first jar I made with distilled white vinegar and lemon peels. The second was pine needs and lemon, and finally orange peels.

To Make

  1. fill a jar with the peels or herbs, top with vinegar, and leave in a dark closet - when you can remember shake the jar.

  2. After 2-4 weeks you can strain the vinegar.

  3. When you are ready to make a solution, mix equal parts with distilled or boiled and cooled water with the vinegar solution.

Some Notes :

  • make sure you are using just the peels, the fruit or pulp will cause the vinegar to turn brown

  • do not use vinegar on marble or granite surfaces because it will break it down

My Experience

I would recommend letting the vinegar sit for longer than 2 weeks. I love the lemon vinegar the most. It has cleaned sticky messes without hard scrubbing, and left my bathroom super shiny! I highly recommend it! I also started new batches when I strained out my old so I would never be without it!

Vinegar Infusions for Hair

My best friend has been recommending Apple Cider Vinegar washes to me since my “no-poo” days so I thought now I would give it a try.

To Make

  1. Fill a jar with herbs - I used rosemary, and olive leaf (you can omit this!)

  2. Fill the jar with Apple Cider Vinegar

  3. Place a cheese cloth between the jar and the lid to prevent rusting

  4. Shake and store in a dark cabinet. Shake it when you remember

  5. After 2-4 weeks strain it and put ACV infusion back into a jar

  6. When you are ready to use mix 1 part ACV with 1 part water

Some Notes :

  • this particular infusion cannot sit with water or mold will grow. Make individual batches right before you use it.

  • rosemary is really great for your scalp, and helping to strengthen your hair.

  • you can add a drop of tea tree oil to the infusion when you are using to help with scalp buildup and clarifying

  • you can leave it in your hair or you can rinse out

My Experience

My hair is so smooth when I use this ! I am obsessed with it! My hair does usually smell like ACV for at least 12 hours, but you could mask with an essential oil spray if it bothers you a lot.

DIY: Shaving Cream

I don’t know about you, but quarantine gave me time. Time to watch documentaries I’ve wanted to watch, start projects I’ve thought about for years, finish programs I started writing years ago, and make a lot of my own products.

A few months after going whole food plant based (not vegetarian when I was 10 - but when I gave up all the packaged foods!) I started to pay attention to what I was putting on my body. I soon realized that most of the products I was using were toxic, so I shifted into buying alternatives.

This took years, and I’m still learning.

Fast forward to today, I’ve started to also look out for products that produced a lot of waste (and plastic).

Here’s some facts about plastic that I’ve recently learned:

  • Plastic was first invented in 1906, and became used more wide spread in the 1960’s.

  • The Plastic Breakdown

    • Plastic bags take 10-20 years to breakdown

    • Plastic bottles take 450 years to breakdown

    • Other types of plastic take 1000 years to breakdown

  • Plastic does not decompose or biodegrade instead it breaks down into microplastics

  • Microplastic is one of the biggest threats to our ocean. Fish are consuming these plastics which are toxic to them. Please check out A Plastic Ocean on Netflix to see the dangers and how it is effecting oceans ecosystem

  • Since fish are consuming these microplastics - they are ending up in our food system. So in reality we are eating plastic

I sat for a while with these facts, and it occurred to me that most (if not all) the plastic ever produced still exists today in some form. So I decided that I didn’t want to continue to add to that mess. Any way that I could possibly avoid plastic I would.

This led me to replacing single use items with reusable ones, starting my own garden, and DIY’ing beauty products.

Today I am going to share with you the shaving cream recipe that I have been loving (especially great with my safety blade!)

What you need:

2 1/2 oz. Shea Butter

2 1/2 oz. Coconut Oil

3 tbsp. Pure Castile Soap

2 tbsp. Jojoba or Almond Oil

Essential Oils of Your Choice

What You Do:

Set a pot of water on the stove and bring it to a boil. Remove from heat and set a bowl over the water. In the bowl place the Shea and Coconut Oil and melt. Once it is melted add in the pure castile and jojoba oil. Allow to cool a bit before adding your essential oils - you’ll need about 20 drops total.

Once the mixture has reached room temperature transfer to the fridge and let it harden. Once it is harden using a hand or a stand mixer whip the cream for about 2-3 minutes until it is fluffy and looks like whipped cream. Once it is whipped put it in a clean glass jar with a lid and store in your shower.

For reference I used 10 drops each of Tea Tree and Cedarwood oil.

Why those oils?

Tea Tree is great for treating blemishes, moisturizing, and cleansing the skin. It is also anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and said to work against ingrown hairs.

Cedarwood also helps to moisturize, is anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial. I chose this because since switching to a safety blade I would get razor burn when I shaved and wanted something moisturizing but great for sensitive skin! Cedarwood and Tea Tree are both used to treat acne so I thought it would be gentle and healing for my legs and the razor burn.

You could pick oils for their healing properties or to make your shaving cream smell nice - the only thing to remember is to wait for the mixture to cool - you never want to heat essential oils!

Small DIY Garden

I’m going to keep this short and sweet since we have shared a TON of content so far this month!

I had always wanted to start my own garden but the fear always held me back. In the city I bought potted herbs, but they always died . I assumed I had a black thumb to be honest, so I didn’t have much hope for this.

I was lounging by the pool, and I saw our old fire pit that was heading for the trash (after watching hours of DIY youtube videos) and thought I could turn it into a mini raised garden.


Here’s what I did in photos!


Clean it Out and Drilled Holes for Drainage

Drainage is one of the most important things when it comes to gardening. You don’t want to drown the plants and rot out. I took a drill and added some holes to the bottom. It was pretty easy.

Added burlap to keep the soil from falling through the hole

I didn’t want the soil to fall out of the drainage holes so I got burlap ( you could also get plastic sheet - but I wanted to keep this plastic free) the burlap is a natural material and will biodegrade. I will keep an eye on it and possible have to change it in the next year or so.

Mixed the soil with coconut fiber

I had bought some coconut fiber for an aerogarden project I never ended up doing and found it in with some other gardening things. I researched that this could help provide nutrients to the soil so I added it in. Not sure if this is helping but it definitely didnt hurt the plants!

I had picked up some pre-grown organic herbs at Whole Foods since I was impatient to wait for seedlings. Normally these die within a few days so it was a bit risky to plant them. They have been in their new home for weeks now and are growing beautifully!

Surviving Summer BBQ's as a Vegan

How many times have you got to a BBQ and realized there was nothing there for you to eat?

It happens to me all the time, and over the years I’ve learned a few tricks

Bring your own food

If you’re new to being a plant based eater this might seem awkward, but I assure you that it will get easier. One thing that I do is show up with one side dish that is enough to put out for everyone to share, and a veggie burger or two for myself and anyone who is interested in trying something new. For side dishes I tend to go for hearty options in case there isn’t anything else there that I could eat

Buy A grill pan or mats

For years I had my own BBQ at my parents house. It was the vegan BBQ and only vegetables could make it on there. Over the years it got worn out and a new BBQ isn’t realistic these days, but I love the char flavor on veggies. If you’re like me and refuse to use a grill that cooks meat you have some options. My go to is a grill pan for the stove, you can find them pretty cheap at Target or a Home Goods (if you’re lucky). I love this option because it’s free of any meat, and you actually get grill marks and a nice char! You could also grab some tin foil trays and place them on top of the BBQ while nobody is cooking!

Don’t Forget Dessert

There is nothing worse than everyone getting to indulge at the BBQ and you not having any options! I am usually okay with snacking on fruit, but sometimes I want something sweeter! If you’re in a bind gab a pint of your favorite vegan ice cream and some cookie and DIY ice cream sandwiches!

Let's Talk Take Out!

Let's talk about take out.

I have to admit that sometimes after a long week of prep I have 0 energy to cook for myself. I recently got stuck in a bit of a rut where I was eating out more often than not.

Then one night I ate at a nearby Indian restaurant and I woke up the next day with an extremely swollen eye lid. I was in full on panic mode, but started fasting, and lowering the inflammation and within a few days the swelling had subsided. At this point I didn't know what was causing the swelling, I wasn't able to pinpoint anything specific ( I had eaten at this Indian spot before)

Then a few weeks later, my mom and I ordered take out from that restaurant. 10 minutes after I finished my dinner I felt the hives forming.

It was undeniable that whatever was being used in this food was not agreeing with my body.

I called the restaurant a few days later to do a bit of detective work and found that they use canola and soybean oil (both inflammatory, deodorized with hexane, and oils that easily go rancid). I started calling a few nearby restaurants to get an idea of what they are cooking with - and every one of them said canola or soybean.

These oils are CHEAP!

When I am shopping for my oils they are often 3x cheaper than the option I am selecting. When you order takeout you have very little control over the ingredients that are being used.

Here's what is very common among restaurants:


Oil

Most restaurants are using cheap oils, the kind that go rancid and create inflammation in the body, These vegetable oils are highly processed with chemicals.

At Hungry Hippie we use clean and healthy oils, and we use them properly. We understand smoke points, and do not use low heat oils (olive oil) above their smoke point.


Produce

Most restaurants are choosing conventional grown produce and not even paying attention to the clean 15/dirty dozen list. This leads to exposure to herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and genetically modified ingredients.

At Hungry Hippie we choose organic and local whenever possible, almost 95% of the meal plan is organic! If we are not using organic produce we are making sure we reference the Dirty Dozen/Clean 15


Added Sugar

In restaurants most salad dressings, soups, and batters contain sugar, and large amounts of it! This is due to our increasing desire for sweet and less of a palette for bitter foods.

At Hungry Hippie we don’t use any refined sugar, and the natural sugars we use are used sparingly. The benefits of natural sugars is that they are not chemically processed ( table sugar is bleached!)!


Cross Contamination

Working in the city I would pop into a deli for breakfast - one morning I noticed that they were cooking the meat and the vegetables on the same pan without washing. This is true about gluten, nuts, and other common allergies.

At Hungry Hippie if we have a client with a special diet or food allergy we make sure to clean and disinfect all tools before proceeding. We take cross contamination very seriously


HFCS/Corn Syrup

Most restaurants are not making sauces, condiments, and dressings from scratch. These products notoriously contain HFCS and/or Corn Syrup. HFCS is a processed ingredient made that hits the blood stream and the liver ( may be the cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease).

At Hungry Hippie we NEVER include HFCS or Corn Syrup in any of our meals or products. We spend our time to make sauces and condiments from scratch!


Another point with Take out is that it can be really expensive, even though they are not using high quality ingredients. At The Hungry Hippie we have been able to take organic produce, high quality oils, and make delicious and affordable meals.

If you have so much on your plate that you are finding it hard to cook for yourself, or if you never have time to pack lunches or make breakfast, than I want to help.

As we are inundated with FLU, COVID scares, and global issues like diabetes and obesity it is more important than ever to put our nutrition first.

Reducing inflammation, and supporting our immune system with food is one of our first lines of defense!

Counting Calories is Not The Key To Weight Loss... Here's Why

I've been getting a lot of inquiries about calories on our meal plan. When I ask what specifically is the goal many people are interested in weight loss.

As of right now we don't include calories in our meal plan, but as the demand for that seems to grow it is something we may consider.

Before that time comes I wanted to use this as a chance to talk a bit about calories and why I personally do not believe they are important for weight loss.

Calories are not made equally

it is more important to look at the quality of food you are putting into your body not just the amount of calories. 100 calories of broccoli reacts very differently in your body than 100 calories of chips or cookies. Broccoli nourishes you, and supplies your body with key nutrients and minerals, and it is stored differently once it breaks down (more on the this later).

If you are reading nutrition labels - it is more important to look at SUGARS than calories.

When we eat sugar our body uses what it needs for energy - If you’ve ever heard eat a banana before a workout - this is why. What our body doesn’t use for energy gets stored as fat. Looking out for sugar on a nutrition label is extremely important if you are trying to manage your weight - and for your overall health and wellness.

Pesticides/Herbicides/Heavy Metals are all stored in the fat cells.

Our bodies do not know what to do with all the chemicals that we are coming into contact with these days. There are chemicals in the air we breath, the water we drink, the food we eat, and the clothes we were. We are surrounded by chemicals. Our bodies are designed to eliminate them to keep us safe, but the rate we are exposed vs. the rate we can eliminate is just too high. To keep us safe from toxins that could make us sick or kill us, our bodies store environmental toxins in our fat cells. in addition to this, toxins also mess with our metabolism, and how our body balances our blood sugar. All leading to weight gain.

Sugar and processed foods are addicting

This is scientific FACTS! Somewhere in time during the US obesity epidemic scientists stated to look into food addiction, and what they found was that processed foods contain certain chemicals that release “feel good” responses in the body. These foods (like cheese and sugar) were found to light up the same area of the brain that heroine does making them highly addictive. This makes it 100% more likely that you will overindulge in a bag of chips is more likely than overeating vegetables and whole grains.

At the Hungry Hippie we place our focus on using NATURAL, organic, and real ingredients. This reduces the chances of being exposed to harmful toxins ( herbicides and pesticides) , and over eating in response to chemicals that trigger addictive eating patterns in your brain.

My Top 5 Vegan Pantry Staples

Two of the things that have made the most benefits to my health have been meal prepping and building my pantry.

Considering I have you covered in the meal prepping department today I want to focus on the 5 things that I always have in my pantry. 

Oats

Oats are super versatile, they are a great source of fiber, can be added to a smoothie, made into a treat (overnight oats!), A quick breakfast or the base of gf bread. 

Quinoa /Beans/Legumes

I always keep a grain and some beans on hand (quinoa and lentils are usually it). Quinoa is usually my go to because it is a complete protein (meaning it has all of the essential amino acids) and takes just 15 minutes to prepare (it also freezes well!) I add quinoa to salads, tacos, oats, or mix with veggies for a quick dinner I can throw together in just a few minutes. In addition I keep dry beans and lentils on hand as well to add variety and protein to any dish!

Coconut Milk

The kind in the can to be exact. I love it because it is shelf stable, and it is the base of my vegan creamer, but can easily be turned into coconut whip cream, or pudding. It can also mix with some spices and a nut butter and become a delicious sauce for quinoa and veggies

Frozen Greens + Fruits

I love to have frozen veggies on hand. They are much healthier than canned (they are frozen when their nutrients are at their peak), and have a longer shelf life than fresh (I always have fresh greens as well!) They can be made into a meal or mixed into a smoothie for an extra dose of your daily greens

Nut butter

Nut butters are high in protein so I always have some at home. I usually rotate my options and mix them up so I don't get bored of the tastes! The only requirements is that they can only have 1 (maybe 2 if it's salt!) Ingredients and that's the nut! I add nut butters into my oats or smoothies,  make sauces, or enjoy with an apple as a snack.


As you can see all of these ingredients are so versatile, can work together for so many different combinations and options,  are high in plant based proteins,healthy fats, and a range of vitamins and minerals. 

They can also be added to the hungry hippie meals to meet your individual needs each week. If you had a longer day and need more protein a quick boil or quinoa will work well with almost all of our dishes + you can never go wrong with adding more greens!
